The story of Medusa can be seen as a metaphor for sexual assault and victim blaming. After the assault, Athena punished Medusa by transforming her into a monster, which could be seen as blaming the victim for the actions of the perpetrator. The snakes for hair and petrifying gaze are sometimes interpreted as symbolic of the trauma and isolation experienced by survivors of sexual assault.
